  • Dietitians use their advanced knowledge in the science of nutrition to advise on appropriate diet, food preparation and menu planning to treat nutrition-related disease. Accredited practising dietitians often work alongside health professionals in hospitals and community settings delivering individual dietary counselling, medical nutrition therapy and group dietary therapy. Their work contributes to the promotion of health, the prevention and treatment of disease such as diabetes and cancer, and optimal health maintenance.

    During this course, you will have an opportunity to work with clients from many cultural and social backgrounds. At QUT Health Clinics you will provide advice for the management of chronic disease, before and after surgery, eating disorders and weight management, food intolerance and allergies. You will also complete professional placements in external settings that may include community health centres, hospitals, correctional facilities and catering institutions. There are opportunities to travel, with the option to gain professional experience in rural and regional Australia, and overseas.
    You will learn from the best at QUT. Our staff have many years of experience working in areas of practice that include sports dietetics and Indigenous health. They hold senior positions on industry boards and councils, and contribute to competency standards which underpin the training of dietitians nationally. Many are leading projects and government initiatives to improve population health and nutrition.

    Career outcomes
    Graduates have a range of career pathways. They often provide nutrition therapy to clients in the management of disease and illness in hospitals, private practice, community health centres and nursing homes.
    Other employment opportunities include consulting to the food industry on product development and marketing, preparing educational material and resources for industry, schools and community, or developing food and nutrition policies for government and non-government organisations.
    This course can also lead to further study or research in nutrition and dietetics, health service management, environmental health and public health.
    Professional recognition
    This course is accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia and graduates are eligible to apply for the Accredited Practising Dietitian credential.
    Graduates can apply for membership of the Dietitians Association of Australia, the Public Health Association of Australia, Sports Medicine Australia, the Nutrition Society and other bodies.
    Course requirements
    There are requirements that you will need to meet as a student in this course. You will need to identify these requirements and ensure you allow sufficient time to meet them. Some of these requirements have associated costs.
    Blue card: You must undergo a criminal history check for working with children and be issued with a suitability card (blue card) before commencing clinical placement/practicum in an organisation where they may work with children or young people.
    The processing of your application may take several months so you must submit your blue card application to HiQ as early as possible to ensure you have your card before you begin any unit that requires contact with children. There is no charge for student blue cards. Students who already have a blue card must register it with QUT.
